On Wednesday and Thursday, our Year 7s immersed themselves in the Blanket Activity and explored the Aboriginal culture and history as told from an Aboriginal perspective. In this interactive learning experience, the students stand on the blankets, which represent family and traditional land. These blankets are gradually folded into a smaller size until students can no longer comfortably occupy the folded surface, at which point the students that no longer fit on the blanket are to return to their seats. This process demonstrates the loss of family, life, and land; it enables participants to experience the setbacks and challenges that the Aboriginal people had to face (and continue to face), as well as the long-lasting impact these have had on them as a community.
Special thanks go to Charmaine Climo and Renarta Coyne for their enlightening presentation.
