With every year, Melville Senior High School Interschool Athletics Carnivals get bigger and better – and 2020 was no exception. As always this was an extremely organised, well run carnival with excited commentary and lots of colourful enthusiastic participation from students and staff alike.
The Athletics carnival is truely a whole-school event, with all the staff and several hundred students participating. What makes a Melville Senior High School Carnival different to most is that while yes there is a focus on striving for sporting success as students hope to be selected into the elite inter-school team, there is also a big focus on novelty events and House spirit. Every student is placed in a 100m race, meaning everyone gets a chance to compete. Students are encouraged to go extravagant with costumes and colours that display their House, and the Year 12 students in particular see it as a highlight event in the school calendar.
Huge credit goes to Ms Coonan and her Physical Education team who spent many hours in preparation and organisation for the event, and also worked tirelessly on the day to ensure it was a smooth success. A thank you also to the rest of the staff for their significant contribution in the running of the different event stations, and of course to the students.
The overall House results are as follows:
1st place: Pegasus 2324
2nd place: Gryphon 2226
3rd place: Aquila 2201
4th place: Cygnus 1886
