Netball

This opportunity provides access for keen netballers to excel amongst high-achieving athletes.

Highly skilled and experienced netball teachers, and coaches have experience in both coaching and playing at state and national levels. This experience assists your child in understanding the level of commitment required to achieve success.

A comprehensive match schedule is in place to ensure the students are applying their skills and experience in competitive practice.

There is also a STEM focus in Netball as students learn about sports science, the human body, the nutrition of athletes, injury prevention and sports psychology.

The endorsement with Netball WA allows students access to exclusive high performance coaching clinics held throughout the year. An exciting aspect of this course is the coaching clinics conducted by renowned international coaches along with current Australian players. The students are given the opportunity to speak to current Australian Netball players and learn about the lifestyle and discipline required to be an elite athlete.

Students learn to manage, coach and umpire throughout the program and will be expected to put their experience and knowledge into practice within their club training that takes place out of school hours.

Application Process

Students apply for the Netball program through a specialist selection process in March and April each year.

Step 1: Online Application

Applicants complete the Specialist Program application form

Step 2: Netball Trial

Students participate in a Netball trial in Year 5 or Year 6.

Top-up testing is available in other years as vacancies become available.

Note: There is no academic test required to apply for the Netball Specialist Program.

Step 3: Attend an Interview

Shortlisted applicants are invited to an interview, where they discuss their interests. The interview is a key part of the selection process.

Step 4: Offer of Placement

Successful applicants receive a formal offer of placement into the Netball program.

Career Pathways and Partners

The Netball program supports pathways into a wide range of creative careers, including:

• Sports coaching
• Umpiring

By completion of the Netball program in Year 10, students can attain a Foundation Umpiring Course and Foundation Coaching Accreditation preparing them for success in senior school and further education at our partner institutions or associations.

• Year 11-12 Existing specialist netball students can complete a SIS2031 Cert II in Sports Coaching (Netball) including a group elective Netball SISSNTB001 which will provide qualifications to perform duties as an assistant netball coach in community based sports clubs.

Touring Opportunities

The Specialist Netball team travel to compete against other top-ranking teams. These tours introduce a range of new and exciting experiences for the students in both Netball and team building.

Tour opportunities include:

• Netball in New Zealand
• The Annual South West Tour where students travel to compete against both regional and metropolitan teams dependent on travel restrictions.
• Tour to the Gold Coast in Queensland to compete in the Gold Coast Netball Carnival against other national and international highly ranked teams.
• Competing in the International Youth Netball Challenge in Singapore. A small select group of students from our High-Performance Program (Years 7 to 10 students) are chosen to travel and represent both the school and Australia dependent on travel restrictions.

Partnerships, Competitions and Coaching Clinics

Students are supported through our partnerships with industry and local universities.

• University Excursions: Students visit Edith Cowan University for workshops. These experiences introduce students to industry-standard tools and tertiary pathways.
• Community Engagement: Students contribute to their school and local community through games, competitions, skill and coaching clinics.

Industry and Education Partnerships

Netball students benefit from partnerships with Edith Cowan University, and sporting associations including Netball WA and Fremantle Netball Association, West Coast Fever gaining access to:

• University workshops and mentoring
• Clinics by industry netball professionals
• Real-world game strategy, skill and team building techniques.

Netball WA Endorsement

Melville Senior High School’s Netball Program is a Tier 1 Netball WA-endorsed school, meaning the school works in collaboration with Netball WA to develop the program in accordance with Netball Australia’s Long Term Athlete Development Plan.

The endorsement from Netball WA means the school is able to focus on developing the whole athlete as part of the Netball curriculum, not just the talent on the court. The Netball curriculum includes strategic gameplay manors, teaching students how to organise, coach and umpire their own games and much more.
