Intensive English Centre
The IEC supports students by providing one year of intensive English studies in smaller classes designed to prepare students for academic achievement in mainstream educational contexts. Education Assistants are on hand to help teachers and double the number of staff in each classroom.
A complete curriculum is delivered whilst providing a supportive learning environment. This 12-month Intensive English Program includes participation in the western Australia Curriculum. We also have strong English as a Second Language/Dialect support in mainstream classes for exiting IEC students.
Why study
Intensive English Centres (IEC) provide newly arrived migrant learners with a supportive learning environment where students from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds are assured of an inclusive curriculum and service provision. Ethnic Education Assistants (EEAs) support teachers in the teaching and learning program and may also provide translating and interpreting services.
Melville SHS IEC is one of three IECs in the South Metropolitan Education Region. It serves Years 7-10 (students aged 11.5 -16 years old) and has a wonderful, diverse student population with young people from a range of countries, cultures and language backgrounds. All of these learners share the desire to learn English. IEC schools fluctuate in number over a year depending on the settlement patterns of newly arrived families.
