Music in Focus

The program offers a range of musical opportunities through sequential learning in solo, group and ensemble performances and instrumental lessons.

Music in Focus is a school-based specialist program designed for our local intake students currently studying an instrument with Instrumental Music School Services (IMSS), or who are receiving private lessons on a musical instrument.

We also offer intake for students accepted into the Gifted and Talented or Specialist Programs in Aviation, Graphic Design Media, or Netball.

Music in Focus – Year 7 and 8

Students have Music in Focus class twice per week, where they grow their understanding of aural and theory, history and culture, composition, music technology, and performance.

Students will attend weekly IMSS lessons (or private instrumental tutoring), and an ensemble class (before and after school commitments)

Students will attend annual masterclasses with music industry professionals and are given the opportunity to perform at school and IMSS music events each term.

Music in Focus – Year 9 and 10

Students have Music in Focus classes four times per week, and they will continue to grow and explore their capabilities in aural and theory, history and culture, composition, music technology and performance. This is extended with project-based learning, music industry workshops, and excursions to universities and TAFE locations.

Students attend weekly IMSS lessons (or private tuition), and participate and perform in at least one music ensemble.

Exploring a vocational pathway – In year 10, students have the opportunity to engage in additional music studies by enrolling in the VET qualification Certificate II in Music. The one year course is delivered as an elective in addition to the Music in Focus classes.

Senior School Pathways

Upon graduating from the Music in Focus program, our students can choose a combination of music classes for study in Years 11 and 12:

a) Music ATAR – performance, composition, analysis, and music literacy
b) Certificate III in Music– two-year qualification with a specialisation in performance
c) PIMS– Instrumental and ensemble music. An endorsed program provided by IMSS, that contributes to a students’ WACE attainment.

Desirable qualities and experience for the Music in Focus program:

2 years of instrumental or vocal lessons (reading and performance) through the IMSS program or with a private music tutor
Has a commitment to learning and playing music alone and with other people
Has a history of independent practice/self-discipline

Note: Students can only apply for Music in Focus if they live within the Melville Senior High School intake area or are enrolled in a Gifted and Talented or Specialist Program in Aviation, Graphic Design Media, or Netball.

Students in other year groups are welcome to apply as vacancies arise.

Applicants will be required to participate in an audition/workshop, an interview and provide previous music reports.

Year 6 students wishing to continue their instrument studies with IMSS through high school, must gain a placement in the Music in Focus program. It is IMSS policy that students must be enrolled in a music class to access free instrumental lessons.

By accepting a position in the program, students are agreeing to these commitments:

Participate in the specialist program until the end of Year 10. This is a four-year program.
Attendance to weekly Music in Focus classes (2 classes per week, increasing to 4 classes per week in Year 9 onwards).
Weekly IMSS lessons and ensemble attendance for the duration of the program.
Participation in school and community performances throughout the school year

Enrolment in the Music in Focus Program involves a 20 minute test and a 20 minute audition for students in Year 6.

Auditions and Intake

Testing and Auditions for entry in the 2027 Music in Focus program will be conducted onsite between Monday 4 May and Friday 8 May.

Applicants will be required to complete a 40 minute audition consisting of:

Theory Test

Short assessment on music literacy topics at Year 6 level.
Duration: 20 minutes

Audition

Performance of one current repertoire item on their chosen instrument, and short assessment on aural skills (pitch and rhythm).
Duration: 20 minutes

Successful applicants will be emailed an audition invitation confirming all details and requirements.

It is recommended that students audition on the instrument they wish to continue their studies with.

Music Ensembles

Student participation in a music ensemble is a key aspect of the Music in Focus program. Students are allocated an IMSS or extra-curricular ensemble based on their year level, experience and instrument they play. These are directed and conducted by IMSS and Music in Focus teachers.

Current ensembles on offer include:

Melville Vox – open to all students via a successful audition
Intermediate and Senior Contemporary Guitar Ensembles
Intermediate Concert Band
Senior Concert Band
Junior and Senior Classical Guitar Ensembles.
Swing Band – by audition or invitation

Performances

Music in Focus students are given exciting opportunities to develop their stagecraft skills and showcase their talents through a range of performances:

In-class – both group and solo outlets
School assemblies, Semester showcases, end of year concerts, and Year 12 valedictory events
Community performances at local primary schools and aged care facilities
Participation in WA Schools Music Festivals hosted by IMSS
