Melville Learning Program

Melville Learning Program (MLP) is a school-focused program within Melville Senior High School committed to providing an inclusive, individualised and supportive learning environment for identified students.
The Program caters to enrolled students through Years 7 to 12, facilitating adjusted curriculums suited to students' needs and abilities. It is resourced as a targeted initiative through the student-centred funding model and individual disability allocation. In line with the Departments vision, staff continually strive to increase their knowledge and understanding to support students within the school environment.

Our Program caters to students with a wide range of disabilities, including but not limited to:

  • Physical disabilities
  • Cognitive and learning disabilities
  • Emotional and behavioural disorders
  • Sensory impairments.

Our Aims

Through the dedicated work of our teaching and education assistant team the MLP’s focus is to help individuals reach their full potential through tailored support and resources that foster independence, confidence, and academic achievement.

Curriculum

The Program provides education and support for the academic and social/emotional development and regulation of students with a diagnosis. In addition to the Western Australian curriculum, the Program also focuses on developing students’ skills to make safe and sensible decisions at school, at home and in the community.

Students may access any part of the Western Australian curriculum from ABLES WA through to senior school courses, including endorsed courses. MLP students attend mainstream elective classes and participate in maths, English science, HASS, and personal & social education within the MLP.

Employability Skills

The MLP Senior School Pathway includes experience in vocational education and training, including Workplace Learning Placements, TAFE and hands-on learning activities to improve students’ readiness to engage in work and the community as young adults.  Students in the senior years also participate in the Award Scheme Development and Accreditation Network (ASDAN).

The year 7-10 science and HASS curriculum follows the mainstream curriculum but has been scaffolded to a level that MLP students can access. Following an assessment, MLP staff assigns appropriate year-level work in math and English to students.

As part of the Program, students take part in mainstream elective classes with support from education assistants. Education assistants always support junior year groups; as the students become older and move through school, they become more independent and may attend elective classes independently.

Emotional Regulation

A key feature within the MLP is developing the emotional literacy of each student and developing strategies alongside the students to enable them to take charge of their emotional regulation.

To support emotional regulation, staff and students in MLP operate within a quiet and calm environment, and class sizes in MLP are usually smaller, with additional support from an educational assistant.

Social Skills

Melville Learning Program actively lead a weekly paper recycling program across the school and attend a daily breakfast club, supporting staff with setting up, packing away and cleaning as part of their community service around the school and to help them engage with employability skills.

MLP operates an ‘MLP Shop’ where students can save reward money for great work and positive attitudes and spend it within the shop. Supporting their numeracy skills and patience as they save up for certain rewards. And we endeavour to participate in several excursions each year, also supporting the growth of social skills within the individuals and as a group.

Sustainability of Additional Needs Understanding

MLP facilitates work placement opportunities and unit hours for students undertaking certificated courses and pre-service teachers. Supporting the movement for greater knowledge and understanding of how-to best support students with additional needs.

Application process

The Placement Committee within Melville SHS select students with recognised diagnoses or those who identify as living with a learning disability for the Program from within Melville Senior High School.

The following documentation will need to be provided in support of an application

  • Diagnosis of disability.
  • Most recent assessment data.
  • Signed permission to release and exchange information form.
  • Parental Agreement Form.
